Migrating site under subdirectory ( /modx ) to root ( / )

I have my testing environment on live server under mysite.com/modx, with friendly URLs enabled .

Can anyone confirm if the following is true in order to migrate:

- I will not have to:
- change any database fields or do export/import

- I will have to
- backup all of my files (database?)
- FTP all of the directories under modx/ and place them under / (root)
- Change mod_rewrite rule in .htaccess

I can confirm that you should backup your database and files. It is always good to backup. I had to change .htaccess, redo some chmodding of files and empty site cache as well.

Backup good idea, yes I know. But I want to know is: do I have to import/export any modx databases/database tables in order to keep everything working.

Chmodding? You mean things like Maxigallery galleries or other files too? I’m guessing permission are ’lost’ then when copying the folders...

Is there an overview somewhere of which files to chmod - or is it roughly the same as with a ’new’ install?

I guess perhaps also some settings should be changed in ’system/site configuration’ tabs.

No, not if you intend to use the same database and tables.

Yes sometimes file permissions get lost. Check the wiki for folders and files that need CHMOD 777 and so on

MODx wiki, yes the same as an install.

Well root sttings have to be changed, yes, as the site will no longer be in the same place. That’s why the .htaccess needs to be edited as well.

I just had to deal with this issue last week and it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. Definitely back everything up, but then in FileZilla or whatever just grab everything in your modx folder and pull it into your root. Make sure you change the names of any files in the root that share the files in your Modx directory (index.php, older .htaccess, etc...). After that, change the site config information and you should be good!

Thanks for the feedback. What you said and changing the rewrite rule for .htaccess - since I am using friendly URLs.

My current .htcaccess file looks like this:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /modx

# Friendly URLs part
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]

So after I transfer everything, to root, it should look like below yes?

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]

Or maybe the second line (RewriteBase) is not needed any longer since everything is already in the root?

Migration & going live is within a couple of weeks... yes! grin

It’s certainly not my favorite part of development process, but it looks like it won’t be that hard. *fingers crossed*

You will also need to check the path settings in the Configuration, both for the resource browser in the Interface and Features tab and for the file manager in the File Manager tab.
