Is this social networking site possible?

Hello, I’m impressed with what I’ve learned so far about MODx.

I need to create a social networking site. We’ll start with with a forum and member profile pages. I see that I can use SMF with MODx.

Is there a way to do multiple personal blogs, each with a personal profile page as its "home page"?
Each of the profile pages would show a blog and other chunks with photos and text (a bio and other about me stuff). So in effect, I’ll have a forum with a bunch of member’s blogs, all linked together.

Is this easily doable with MODx? I realize "easy" is relative. I’m comfortable with CSS design and PHP. I’ve never used MODx, but I am familiar with other CMS.

Check out the PPP snippet. That’d probably be a good start for your profile pages. Then for the blogs check out the tutorial in the Ditto snippet forum.

PPP sure could help, but I think it would take a bit of specific development to have something similar to Elgg with MODx.
I have no doubt in a few months this will become a reality, it’s a just a matter of having the right extensions handy !

But frankly don’t expect this out of the box.
It depends exactly what you mean by "social networking", and which features you really need "out of the box".

glad to hear about that, is there an ongoing process to trace it till the end statement?

Let me clarify this MotSmart, I meant I had faith - given the rate extensions are being created - that coders would pick it up and make this a reality in the near future. Not that it was in the hopper (e.g there is no ongoing process).

If you were just starting a project like this would you try to do it with MODx or would you try something like Joomla?

Well personally I would use MODx because I really like the fact that it can do anything at all that I need to do. But Joomla might be easier to get this particular project up and running quickly if you’re happy with the way that its available modules work. If, however, you want something different from the default Joomla modules, then you’re probably better off starting with MODx and doing it the way you want it from the beginning than trying to hack Joomla.

Not sure I would go for Joomla but rather for Elgg, which is not bad out of the box and templatable...

But yes it would be awesome to make this available to MODx sure

Personnaly I used better somethings like Dr. Up Al
All is out the box.
SMF is a little big for me. Punbb is more lite if you don’t like the light base forum module. Sure all depends the communauty you planed to construct.
