Indeed. Every link to a separate resource, whether it’s to a tracking service, .js or .css or image files, or anything else that the page needs before being rendered will mean another request, and a wait while the request is satisfied. I really hate all these tracking services and advertising servers! I frequently just close the tab on a site that is hung up on one of these things. I suspect, however, that a little research would discover a way to use these services without blocking the rendering of the basic page. And as far as files from your own site, consider that every link causes an entire back-and-forth dialog with the server, just as it does for the original page request. Every web developer should take a few minutes to go through the steps to use raw telnet from the command line. This goes for mail, too. This is exactly what your web browser and mail client do for you automatically. I don’t think that very many people realize what’s going on; it’s much like a swan in a smooth pond. Looks calm and serene and simple from above, but under the surface he’s paddling like crazy.
