I have just spent 3 days completing my first Modx site which was working really well and now I cannot see any pages.
After reading about some issues some people were having moving their sites from development servers to live servers I decided that I would develop my site on a new host server then just change the DNS setting from the original site to the new site.
But now it’s not picking up the index page or the manager index page.
I hadn’t changed anything at all, just re-pointed the original DNS to the new IP address.
When I was building it the domain I was working on was www2.etc. Because of this I thought that the 6 paths in the core config file should be changed to www. but I have done that and still no joy.
I am not using friendly URLS.
Does anyone have any Ideas or things I could try.
Thanks
Rich

Don’t worry, it’s quite likely that we can get you straightened out.
More information would be useful though, like for example the domain name and the IP address and the version of MODx you’re using. It’s hard to tell what’s going on without being able to look at it.
It could be anything - your DNS record not propagating fully yet, the settings in config.inc.php being wrong, a caching problem (definitely try clearing the cache directory manually - if you’re using Revo, empty the directory /core/cache/ by SFTP or however you access your files), or something else entirely.
The first thing to try is running Setup again (in Upgrade mode). That will often straighten out the paths.
As long as the "Upgrade" box is checked, your content will not be touched.
Important: If you can’t check the "Upgrade Install" box, don’t proceed. Report back and we’ll tell you what to do next.
OK here goes.
As my first post earlier today the front and back end of the site weren’t appearing at all, then I amended the 7 address links in the core/config.inc.php file, then I got a friend to look at it and he found an old link in the workspace table which he fixed. Then he found a load more old addresses in the core/action_map/mgr/actions.cache.php file, which could not be changed because of a permissions problem, this file is still in there called ’old’.
He basically came to the conclusion that it was some sort of cache problem but he could’t get any further.
Basically what’s happening now is that the front end keeps coming up with ’page not found’ but then when I load the manager and view the site from the ’site menu’, or ’preview button’ the page it’s ok. This is ok for a while then suddenly the ’page not found’ appears again.
I have emptied the cache many time the the problem keeps re-appearing.
Here’s some more info:
PHP 5.2.4
Modx 2.1.3-pl
Core cache folder is not empty
All the needed folders are 777
admin note: sensitive information removed
Is it right that if I install a fresh copy in upgrade mode all my db stuff will be OK.
Thanks for your help guy, much appreciated.

Yikes, take your login info out of the previous message *immediately* and change the username and password. Always send those by PM rather than giving them out to the world.
Try manually deleting the files in the core/cache directory.
Yes, the upgrade install should preserve your content. But try running the upgrade install after flushing permissions, flushing all sessions, before you go to the trouble of re-uploading MODX.
HI Bob, didn’t even realise the login was in there until I saw your post just pasted it in then got distracted, thanks for deleting, I have changed my login now, it’s been a very long day.
Just tried deleting the core cache content through my control panel and only 3/4 of them deleted, I had to go in via FTP to delete the others, not sure whether that means anything.
I flushed permissions and sessions, opened the front end in a new browser and got ’Page not found.’ But again after loading the manager first, then typing in the address the page displays.
In fact I have just tried something that has repeated this behaviour 5 times. If I am logged in to the manager I can type in the address and the page displays, as soon as I logout and type in the address the front end disappears.
I have repeated that 5 times and every time was consistent.
Would it be possible for the front end to only be visible to ANYONE only when I AM logged in, what do you think? I must admit that the whole access control system was a bit confusing.
Cheer

Hmmm... I have no explanation for this, but it sounds similar to another problem someone is having. What happens if you go to a subpage when logged out? For example domain.com/index.php?q=2
The fact that you can delete some cache files but not others suggest a possible permission issue in the cache directory, though I don’t think that would explain your problem.
This might: It also sounds like you might have set some Security Permissions in MODX. When you’re logged in to the Manager and preview documents, you have special rights. Other users don’t have those and get sent to the page-not-found page when accessing the same pages.
Do you have any resources in resource groups?
Do you have any Resource Group Access ACL entries?
Eureka!!!!!
It was the resource groups that I set up to hide some pages from my client. I must have misunderstood what I was reading.
Can anyone explain how to hide a couple of pages in the resource tree from my client.
I had 2 resource groups set up, one for ’editable content’ (for the client to see and edit) and one called ’test pages’ (for only me to see).
I then had a duplicate of the ’resource policies group’ assigned to them and had the editable content ticked on each ’resource access’ permissions tab.
I’ve obviously missed some vital bit of information somewhere.
Many thanks for all the help. I’ts been a bit of a rollercoaster learning curve, one minute I’m thinking this is the best cms ever and then I’m never gonna use it again, so again thanks for your help, very much appreciated and now I’m looking forward to my next project again.
Cheers
