Hi Mark, Yes I have test it directly when it was released! I have test it with the same project, with +/- 1800 pages, and the site isn’t any faster then before. When you’re online at msn I will give you the test URL so you can see it if you want!

MSN refuses to work on my laptop since it got back from HP - haven’t really looked into it yet.

Could one of you kind gentlemen/ladies/undecided please post some instructions as to what kind of tests to perform to try and figure out where issues with the site may be?

I run a variety of sites on different hosts - all MODx 2.0.7 and above - and experience quite alarmingly different speeds, for both manager and front-end (but mainly noticeable on front end). For example, I run a dev site and a live site (ie same templates, content, css - or should be) using the same core setup (MODx) on two servers (same hosting co):

Server 1Server 2

PHP 5.2.16PHP 5.2.14

MySQL 5.1.54MySQL 5.0.91

PDO driver 5.1.54PDO driver 4.1.22

Base 0.265Base 0.2749

For my base test, I simply put this into an empty page (which may not prove anything, I’m not sure - I’ve also tried this with just the base template):
          <div style="absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;background:#fff">
[^qt^] - Query Time - Shows how long MODx took talking to the database<br/>
[^q^] - Query Count -Shows how many database queries MODx made<br/>
[^p^] - Parse Time - Shows how long MODx took to parse the page<br/>
[^t^] - Total Time - Shows the total time taken to parse/ render the page<br/>
[^s^] - Source - Shows the source of page, whether is database or cache.
          </div>

When tested ’raw’, the cached version is often slower than the database version, which I fail to understand at all. Anyway, moving on. I’ve put that same piece of code in the footer of other pages and a typical request for what should be an identical page might show:
Server 1 from database 3.5s, from cache 2s
          Server 2 from database 16+s, from cache 5+s (or 12s and 7s)

The only other difference between the two is that Server 2 is operating in a multi-context scenario. Both contexts that are serving the speed-test page have about 200 published resources in them.

What should I be looking at, in order to find out where the speed problems are and how to improve the situation?

I’ve just worked with Bert to bring down loading times the first time from 8-12 to 5-8 seconds by replacing a bunch of getResources calls with a simple custom snippet to do what needed multiple getResources calls with one faster snippet.

I think the complexity of that specific site is the main reason it’s being slow, and when spending some more time developing custom tools that could be brought down by more still.

In your case.. there’s probably something else going on. What makes me wonder right now is the PDO driver not matching the MySQL version, but I’m not sure if that could have an influence that big.

I’m using Revo a lot right now and using the manager is just really quite painful... it’s just loading everything every time I move page, the whole tree reappearing bit by bit.

I want to provide constructive info for any tips on how to improve things, so if someone could tell me what exactly to provide that’d be great.

I never thought I’d miss frames, but I do miss them from the old manager. It was way quicker updating one window rather than the whole page.

I installed Firebug at someone’s suggestion to monitor speeds.

                Ouch.

                Page on Revo: 2.0.8, 4.8kb, 3.84s.
                Page on Evo: 2.7kb, 61ms.

                Yep, 61ms vs 3.84s!

This is the exact same server as well, FWIW.

Any tips? Any further info I can give?

                Thanks

I have installed Evo also and the pages in there are much faster then in Revo

Okay, as if by magic I solved it! My top navigation, which was complex, was set to be uncached. So it was having to do a lot of work. Removed that exclamation mark, and voila... much faster.

I still find Revo slower on front and back end... but it doesn’t feel quite so critical now!

another thing which can slow revo down dramatically are lot of output-filters like that without else:

                      [[+count:gt=`0`:then=`
                      <a href="[[~[[+listResource]]? &provincia=[[+sigla]]]]">[[+provincia]] ([[+count]])</a><br/>`]]

I don’t know, if this is a bug, but this tags are not removed by chunk-processing for example with $modx->getChunk(), when the condition-result is false, this results in very slow further parsing and they stay in that same form in cache-files.

You should allways use the else-condition to speed it up like that:

                      [[+count:gt=`0`:then=`
                      <a href="[[~[[+listResource]]? &provincia=[[+sigla]]]]">[[+provincia]] ([[+count]])</a><br/> `:else=``]]

and parsing will be lot faster, because they are removed by chunk-processing, when false.

may be its even better to use the If-snippet for conditionals like that.
