I’m setting up a new computer, hoping to play more with modx SVN, and wanting to try a few new tools. Has anyone been using Netbeans for their PHP/JS/CSS code?

I’ve been using Eclipse (mostly with Aptana and a few other plugins). After a test drive of Netbeans last week, I’m thinking it might be a great switch.

Both Jason and I use Netbeans for modx dev.

I also plan a switch but didn’t have the courage yet. I also used Aptana but found it buggy. Let me/us know how it goes.

Switched to NetBeans recently and I’m liking it so far.

I use NetBeans 6.5, 6.7 and 6.8 on various linux boxes, personally I much prefer 6.5, but NetBeans is my IDE of choice at the mo..
Use MODx, or the cat gets it!

Thanks for the feedback. Eclipse never felt quite right; it always felt bloated; but other dev environments for the web (at least the ones that run on Linux) haven’t had the features of Eclipse.

It looks like the move to Netbeans will be a good one.

I tried both Aptana and Eclipse PDT at different times and found PDT to be the less bloated and more efficient of the two. I didn’t intend to move from PDT but then it crashed on my PC and that made me decide to try something new. Jason mentioned something on Twitter that made me decide to try NetBeans instead of reinstalling PDT. Right now I’m running NetBeans 6.8 on my macbook and it runs great.

Just wondering what is the correct procedure to set up NetBeans for a remote modx project.

It seems that after the FTP setup NetBeans started to download all the remote files locally. Not sure where for now.

Are there any recommendation to setting up a new modx project (new or existing) with NetBeans

                  Thx

I’ve grown very fond of Netbeans as well. Whenever I use it for a MODx site i use the remote PHP project approach. I include all snippets, chunks and templates from the filesystem through a utility snippet. Then I create the files in that location using Netbeans.

It is not ideal however. It takes a long time for it to get a complete recursive directory listing. Then it will by default check all files for download (yes that means images too sad ). This means you will have to uncheck a lot of stuff every time. Because it is too much work to filter everything out manually I usually only checkout the assets/snippets and manager/includes directories. Still even for those there are at least some images included which I need uncheck.

And the worst is that if you upload new files instead of creating them via netbeans you will have to repeat the above procedure.

                    Someone has any tips/workarounds?

I’ve been devoted to NuSphere’s PhpED for years, but I’ve been playing with NetBeans and there are some things I really like about it. Having multiple search results tabs stay on the screen is a fantastic feature. It’s a godsend when you’re mucking around in various, distant parts of the code. The ability to open multiple projects at the same time and search all of them is also a really nice feature. It’s also *much* easier to create a new project on an existing directory in NetBeans.

On the down side, it takes forever to load compared to PhpED and I *really* miss seeing the full file path of the current file in the top line, especially since MODx has many files with the same name and I’m sometimes working with more than one of them at a time. And, with many MODx installs on my machine, it’s easy to be working on a file in the wrong install. Maybe there’s a configuration setting that will display the path, but if there is, I haven’t found it. It’s a real pain to do a "Save As" to check the path or expand all the trees until you find the highlighted file.

I also haven’t gotten the debugger to work at all (though I haven’t spent much time trying), which is a shame because the PhpED debugger doesn’t seem to have a "continue" option for when you’re stopped at a breakpoint and want to proceed to the next breakpoint.

I’m still switching back and forth.
