Yes, the empty DB space is where the MODx tables should be being created. As mentioned, I already have the username and password to access the db that 1and1.com set up for me. That’s not the issue.

config.inc.php.blank has nothing in it, and config.inc.php hasn’t been created on the server yet, due to the error message I’m getting.

It has always worked before on this particular host.

    Still no closer.

Yes, I "have created an empty mysql database on your host and given it privileges for your username/password". I haven’t created a database called modx_. Am I supposed to do this? I thought the installer was supposed to do it for me.
The empty DB you created will be the MODx database. You need to create a user for that database with full privileges then edit the file manager/includes/config.inc.php to include the database name, the username of the user, and the user’s password.

MODx does try to create the DB for you during the install, but it doesn’t work on all hosts.

OH! Now I understand... the DATABASE NAME was already given to me in the database set up - it’s not modx, only the TABLES need modx_ as the name... grrr!! I should have seen that.

Thanks for your help, and for pointing me in the right direction!

        Almost right.  smiley

You’re right about the database name, but modx_ is just the default *prefix* for the tables.  It’s arbitrary and you can set it to anything you want, but most of us leave it at "modx_" unless we have a reason to change it.

i was having the same problem and then found on cpanel that i had not actually given the user i created the full rights to the database i created. (seperate step of adding user to database) after i did that everything worked like a charm. took me a while to figure it out but in the end it worked out.

hope that helps anyone else who finds this thread.

Well, I am going to the same step. For whatever reason when I created db it failed with suggestion to choose "SET NAMES" option. Could someone clarify this step and what is the difference?
When I swithed to "SET NAMES" it installed correctly.

            Thank you.

What version of MySQL (server and client versions please) are you deploying on?
