Did a search and found a couple of topics, but none of them provided a fix that worked for me.

I’m using the hosting at 1and1.com, and have set up my database from the control panel there (it’s not CPanel). I have my correct username, database host and password entered on the installation screen. I click on "Click here to create your database or to test the selection of your database" and then get the message "Checking database: failed - could not create database".

What is going wrong? I know I have permission to write to the database I just created - setup is finished, and it’s never been an issue before with this host. Is it something to do with permissions on the files through my FTP?

If you’ve already created the db then the message
Checking database: failed - could not create database
will indeed fail, all you need to do is press the ’test your connection’ button, or if you are confident that your params are OK, just fill in the details on the db page and press next, the checks on the next page will tell you if you can proceed or not.

No, I mean I created the container for the database - ie: the username / password / database host for this installation. I haven’t added any tables or anything.

I cannot click "Next" - it won’t allow me to, due to the connection failure.

Here’s a screenshot of the error:

Please help! I have never had this issue before with this host, it’s very strange!

OK, not quite sure what this means in your setup
No, I mean I created the container for the database
Do by container you mean you have created an empty mysql database on your host and given it privileges for your username/password? Or, have you just created a username/password on your host to use for MODx. If its the latter this user must have privileges to create a database. You seem to have passed the first step, ie you have collations, so it may be the database modx doesn’t exist, what did you call this when you created it?

Yes, I "have created an empty mysql database on your host and given it privileges for your username/password". I haven’t created a database called modx_. Am I supposed to do this? I thought the installer was supposed to do it for me.

                Recheck back,
                1. are you sure the username hasn’t change as the webhost default? I always get the different usernames i’ve created for mysql. Usually it became "username_username" (1st one is the username to cpanel/back-end, 2nd one is username i’ve created for mysql).
                2. same with the database, it has changed to be "username_database" (1st one is the username to cpanel/back-end, 2nd one is the database).

The empty DB you created will be the MODx database. You need to create a user for that database with full privileges then edit the file manager/includes/config.inc.php to include the database name, the username of the user, and the user’s password.

MODx does try to create the DB for you during the install, but it doesn’t work on all hosts.

OK, but this is the database name you are using on your screenshot, it must exist or MODx will try and create it. What name did you create your DB as? Use that on the installer form, mot modx.

No, neither of these are what’s going on. I’m not using CPanel, as mentioned above. It’s 1and1.com hosting administration panel, with different methods/options from Cpanel. The username is the username, same with the host name and password.
