I have created a new issue:
http://svn.modxcms.com/jira/browse/MODX-656.
Will add the latest modifications tonight to the tracker. Ignore the stuff posted on google groups and here in the forum. The latest build is much better.

Latest changes:
You may now switch off the question marks calling up the tooltip window. Instead you get a nice css based tooltip while moving the mouse to any form label. Its much faster and more customizable. The template variables have tooltips as well, so you get a uniform layout throughout the whole document. A nice side effect is, that you may now write much longer caption texts without clogging your layout.
One thing I don’t know how to solve right now is the questions how to hide a complete tab. I can switch off the contents of Meta/Keywords, but the tab stays in the list...
Rebuild the menu tabs and added "document content", "template variables" and "access permissions". No need to scroll down your document anymore. Just one click on the menu tab. I can see the whole write tab, including the document tree on 1280x885px sized browser window.
I have also cleaned up my additions the stylesheet, the old one was way beyond messy. Also added lots of comments to make customizing easier.
I’ll upload my files on monday to the respository.
Regards,
pepebe
Attached you will find some screenshots
I like it; looking good Pepebe, good job!

Thanks, glad you like it!
I’ll upload the files in the next hours.
Just to keep you informed about related ideas as future projects/tasks i’ll cut an paste my notes here. I have a habit of writing them into the files I’m working on, so please don’t mind the form...
<!--Keywords:->
<!--CV(singular/plural): Content Variable - A variable pulled from table modx_11site_content-->
<!--TV(singular/plural): Template Variable - A variable pulled from modx_11site_tmplvars and-->
<!--Item: A collection of variables describing a particular object. For example a document or a weblink.-->
<!--Ideas:-->
<!--00. Rewrite mutate_content_dynamic.php to create the whole content dynamically. Right now the overall structure is static html with inline php here and there to fill in contents.-->
<!-- Rewriting it will make it possible to change the layout and its contents depending on role, userid, template and other things -->
<!--01. Add a display_params table containing information about the overal layout of each variable (CV and TV) when it is display in a form -->
<!--It might by necessary to store that information context sensitive. Don't know why, its just a feeling... -->
<!--02. Treat the inclusion of variables context sensitive. A "Document" item will need other variables as for example a "weblink". -->
<!--03. Allow definition of (content) items. Each item consists of any number of CV and TV -->
<!--Example: "Image item" - cv_id, tv_image_url, cv_description, cv_title-->
<!--New table: "content_item_groups": id, name, description, sort_order-->
<!--Create dialog defining variable groups (fieldsets) for each item.-->
<!--New table "content_item_variables": Contains information about the variables used by an item, to which kategegory (fieldset) they belong and in which order they appear within the fieldset-->
<!--Create dialog to assign CV and TV of a particular item and assign them to different groups (fieldsets). Also set sort order for those variables within any group.-->
<!--Mission: Identical output to the static content template.-->
<!--Possible use: Create an image item. Give it among other variables a title, a caption and a url. Now you can grab that information whenever you pull that image from the database -->
<!--Questions:-->
<!--Though each item has it's own set of variables that describe it, it will be necessary to to hide some variables depending on who is working on a particular item.-->
<!--Restrictions could be applied to different roles as well as to individual users-->
<!--Right now this is achieved by tools like managermanager or by hiding items through css-->
<!--Idea: Restrict user access to -->
<!--It might also be interesting to provide different standard content depending on the template

Personally, I find my scroll wheel horribly productive when seriously editing things. Adding an extra click into the mix when modifying the content + page settings + TVs is a big drawback for me. Scrolling for me is much faster and doesn’t involve a small mouse target.

You’ve got a point there. Let’s have both! I’ll think about a solution.
