Hey guys, been trying to get MODx live for a day or so now but no joy (yet). I have tried to install MODx into my Media Temple host and then import my Local Host site (exporting and importing the db)

I am trying to install MODx onto mydomain.com/install but get the following problem:
’Checking database: failed - could not create database’
    http://www.elwglobalarmour.com/error_img2.png

what do I need to do in order to intall MODx???

      it says
"if no database exists, the installer will attempt to create one. This may fail depending on the MYSQL user permissions"
so i guess, you don’t have the right permissions for your installer to create the db
actually i always create the databases myself using phpMyAdmin and importing the sql-file, i never tried to let the installer create my database

Ok so the other way of doing it goes:

        >>>Create new DB at MediaTemple

        >>> Export my local db and import the SQL file to my new MediaTemple DB>>>

        >>>edit the config.inc.php at localhost to match my MediaTemple DB settings >>>

        >>>copy my local site across via FTP >>>

        >>>Try and login at mydomain.com/manager

I did this last night but it didn’t work. Am I missing something here??? The client need the site up for a big presentation today AAARRRGGGG!! : Im in trouble :’(

that should actually work, at least you should be able to log into the manager
edit the config.inc.php at localhost to match my MediaTemple DB settings
recheck everything - db details - typos etc.

*edit: ...maybe someone here with MediaTemple experience could jump in to help

and if you’re using the .htaccess file, you maybe need to change the "RewriteBase / " settings to those on the new server

              !!! huh!!! huh
Yeah I understand it exactly and have done it a number of times before with other sites (not using MODx tho)

The only other thing I can think of is the .htaccess files / I have not touched these during local development.

The ht.access file in the /manager folder has:
              # For unexpected logouts in multi-server/cloud environments see:

              RewriteEngine Off

              <IfModule mod_security.c>
              # Turn the filtering engine Off
              SecFilterEngine Off
              </IfModule>

and my ht.access file at the main folder is:
              Options +FollowSymlinks
              RewriteEngine On
              RewriteBase /
              + other stuff below

When I copy the site across I do rename both to .htaccess

My local site works great, grr

as long as you don’t rename the file to .htaccess, it won’t be "active"...so if you haven’t renamed it locally (and use it for friendly urls e.g.), you don’t need to on the remote server

*edit: actually this shouldn’t have an effect on being able to log into the manager...it has to be related to those config.inc.php details

I guess I’ll just try the above process again and hope for the best!!!

Before FTP’ing your existing site across log into it and clear the cache if you’ve not already done so, you may also have to run the installer on your new site location in upgrade mode.
Use MODx, or the cat gets it!

Too late is transferring across now... Also I deleted the install folder on my local site sad So there won’t be an install folder when it’s FTP’d across sad Can I download and unzip the original MODx download and FTP the Install folder from that???
