Create your database first and then install. Your host likely doesn’t allow create database privileges. Might be something we should add to the installer explanation.

If that would be the case, shouldn’t had Coppermine Photo Gallery (which I’ve installed a while back) have the same problem?
It installed without troubles and it placed a lot of stuff in the database.

Gonna try you’re tip later today, first I’m off to bed since it’s 1:16 AM over here tongue

        Hmm, got it working smiley

The installer wanted to create a database named modx (or something).
It couldn’t do that since there was already a database present, created by Coppermine Photo Gallery.

So I had to change the databasename in the installation of MODx to the one that already excisted.

MODx added it’s stuff next to the stuff already present "thanks" to Coppermine Photo Gallery.

So now MODx is installed grin

At the moment I don’t have the interest in troubleshooting this, I’d rather it just work.

Hence, I’m looking to download the older version, 0.9.6.1p2 - Where can I find it?

          Thanks

          Update: Found a link, thanks

            Hi,

You might want to change the "Connection Method" to "SET NAME".

This post comes up first in Google for this error so I thought I should also post my solution here, hope that’s ok considering the post age. Some background - I’m a web designer and do a lot of MODx installs.

Exact same problem happened for me as the posters above (all my database and login details were correct, checked and double-checked, but when I tried to install on the remote server I got the error "Checking database: failed - could not create database").

I tried a heap of different things to try and troubleshoot the problem but nothing worked. In the end what did work was temporary disabling AjaxSearch by just removing the code I had in my search snippet ([!AjaxSearch? &ajaxSearch=`0` &AS_showResults=`0` &AS_landing=`41`!]), emptying out the database, re-exporting the localhost version of the MODx database, and doing the entire upload again.

Painful but this worked. Hope it helps someone else out in future.
