...and, reinstalling the old fashioned way failed me.

Also tried turning off caching - didn't work. Didn't expect to since I've cleared core/cache many times.

Turned off recaptcha2 (see my first post above...the one regarding the error log). Didn't help.

No, I meant to go to System (gear icon) -> Dashboards. Select the default dashboard. Then, on the widgets tab, right-click on each widget and select "Remove from Dashboard."

You may have to manually delete the core/cache files to stop the widgets from executing.

Thanks for responding again, Bob. Unfortunately, the mystery continues. Removing the widgets didn't work.

BTW, I also tried turning off Mod Security and checking to make sure virtual memory was unlimited. Didn't work.

Are you using English in the manager or another language?

            English.

This is happening to a site that was upgraded to 2.6.5. Actually, there are two sites this is happening to, both upgraded with no previous issues (except the hacking). One displays just the top section not appearing and the second has the whole page not appearing except the set of buttons at the top-right of the page. Refreshing the page brings it all back. All intermittently.

            Thank you for responding, @chrisandy.

The only time this happened to me, it turned out to be a styling issue - the CSS was basically hiding the top bar but that was some time ago.

In the meantime, it could be worth looking at this thread...

...to see the conclusion (which isn't necessarily to do with language but locale) which seems to point to the server software
