    fran2008,

If I’m following this thread, you’re really talking about a custom application if you want to have a solid, usable experience that’s not a clone of other "pre-baked" solutions. MODx provides the building blocks for you to assemble, but it doesn’t provide the pre-assembled kit. In my opinion, each site deserves to have an experience explicitly tailored and usable by its specific audience ... especially if you want it to look uniquely yours and maintain an easy upgrade path.

To reiterate though, all the core bits are in place for MODx. You’ll just need to spend some time creating a bespoke implementation that strings them all together.

If you need a more plug-and-play solution you’ll probably want to look at one of the other great alternatives like Joomla! or Drupal. They’re chock full of canned modules. I’ve got no experience with them in a long time though so I can’t offer any specific advice there.

      Yes, thanks for your reply.

I was analyzing the different CMS, and I have concluded that MODx is the CMS for my project.
I will update my html web site.

The html web site to update has maps, photos and I want to develop one module that permit to the visitors create his or her own adventure tour.
I understand that I have to develop this module and after MODx will help me to show as one all.

The problem I believe is that I developed my html web site, 7 years ago, and I am trying to update my knowledge to update the html web site with
      MODx strengths.

Would you please recommend one plan to update my html web site with MODx?

        Hi,

Now, I have one alternative to update my html tourism site.

NING a social networks can be the tool that I need.

Do you have comments about the relationship between MODx and NING?

            Fran,

Ning is great if you want something that you can have up and running in a few minutes. I use it as a sub-directory for the social networking and blogging aspects of clients sites. (It’s a lot easier to use than something like Wordpress, although Wordpress can be easy enough.)

However Ning doesn’t allow you any of the customization and backend admin functions etc that Modx does.

It’s really a completely different product, albeit a very good one.

It’s not a true CMS, although you could use it as one, to a point. However parts of the design and menu structure are either fixed or not easily adjusted.

You should consider what your real objectives are and which product will best achieve them. Ning will certainly take care of all the uploading of videos, photos etc and allow each use to have their own customized page etc.

Alternatively you could use both products side by side.

The relationship that I am searching between MODx and NING is to use MODx to update my html web site and to use from CMS MODx social networks as NING for the tourism area.

Would you please help me with your comments?

The way to do this would be to have a link to ning in your MODx; a weblink document would do the job nicely. I don’t know how ning works; if you can skin and add menu items to it, then make it look like your MODx site, and add a link back to your site.

Unless I’m totally mistaken, ning is not on your web server at all, so interaction would be somewhat limited.

How "skinable" is Ning? If it can be skinned to look like your site would be cool.

I think that there is a relationship between MODx and NING.

If you use NING as a tools from MODx, you would be satisfiy some requirements of tourism application

What is your opinion and do you have have some experiencia using some social network tools used as tool from MODx?

                      Fran,

                      a few points.

1: Ning is skinnable, but not that skinnable, at least not without a lot of effort. Probably the easiest way to do it would be to select a Ning skin and use the basic Ning Appearance options to modify it slightly to your own look, and then copy that design over to Modx.

2: You can have Ning and Modx both under the same url by using the Your Own Domain feature at Ning, this costs about $5 a month. You can then place the Ning part in a sub folder and adjust your DNS settings accordingly. That way it will appear to users like they are still on the same site, even though the Ning part will still be hosted at Ning.

3: Also, if I understand part of your questions, you would not however, be able to use Ning out of the Modx admin panel. You would still have to login to Ning to edit any Ning content.
