  • Hello Friends of the ModX Community,

I've been encouraging customers to make the jump from ModX Evolution to Revolution. Each time I do I remember what a rigamarole the whole process is, and usually refer to both:

    http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Upgrading+from+MODx+Evolution

and then the very helpful guide by Bob Ray, (thanks, Bob!):

    http://bobsguides.com/migrating-revolution.html

Both posts mention a forthcoming migration / auto-upgrade tool. The post on the ModX site (last updated in 2010) states:

Automated upgrading from 0.9.6.*/Evolution is not yet available in MODx Revolution 2.0.0. A migration tool will be provided sometime after the release of MODx Revolution 2.0.0.

and Bob's page on the subject states:
Eventually, there will be automated processes to help with the conversion and, ultimately, the whole process may be automated.

I understand that a lot of wonderful development is happening on both versions, Evo and Revo, and I am an undying supporter of ModX developers and the community, and of ModX LLC. I know there are bigger fish to fry. But I have to ask: is this actually planned, in the works, or not actually happening? If such a tool is no longer a part of the plan perhaps we should let our users know by removing the language that might lead people to think that it is.

    With respect,

    Rafi

    • There is Provisioner, but I was never able to get it to work. Didn't really push too hard to try to figure out what the problem was, but it wouldn't even connect for me.

I moved Bob's Guides to Revo with Provisioner, but I think it only works with older versions of MODX.

I moved an Evolution 1.0.5 to Revolution 2.2.6 with Provisioner. Didn't work completely but some manual fixes here and there (snippet and chunk renaming) did the trick. Took me about an hour.

Did you enter your API key? I forgot that the first times and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't connect at first. ;-)
            • Yes. I just kept getting my Evo site's not found page.

Thanks for the tip- I'll give Provisioner a try and update this thread with my results.

Bob, you are correct. I just tried installing Provisioner on ModX Revo 2.2.6 and connecting to my Evo site which is running 1.0.9. Didn't work. So at this point there is still no easy or automated way to import from Evo to Revo.

                    Maybe possible to downgrade Evo?
Evolution user, I like the back-end speed and simplicity smiley
                    • I've given up trying to use Provisioner after attempting to use it with 1.0.6 / 2.2.6 and then downgrading to 1.0.5 and 2.2.6 with no luck.

Thinking I'll import the content manually and then setup everything else by copying and pasting from Evo.

This seems like it might speed up the DB import: http://www.revitalagency.com/blog/modx-evo-to-revo-site-content-migration-tutorial/

                      Has anyone tried it?
