@goldsky : is that me that found the bug?
Yep. See the conditional statement on the commit, it’s actually a syntax error.

It looks like it’s the work being done in $this->_imgShaper that’s running up the clock.
That’s what the fixing was about.
Clock it again after the commit?

I pulled down just that file and retimed the loading. Unless I did something wrong, the equivalent times for "generated" and "original" are about 0.01 sec each - or less. In each case, the site cache was cleared before loading the page in a separate browser (which had its cache cleared before each page request).
So that looks like it does the trick! Thanks!

Another question, @goldsky, this time about setting up my client to manage the Easy 2 module.
I set up an Editor role, checked all boxes under module management and assigned a user to this role, but when I test this Editor role and select Easy 2 module, I only see the dashboard and no other menu items.
How do I give my Editor role full use of the Easy 2 module?
go to the ’User’ page, synchronize the users with MODx’s.

Thanks, @goldsky, that worked...I’ve a hard time remembering to synchronize, but I’m learning that often solves a problem.
Yet another question... How does one remove the small "e2g" that appears in the lower right corner of each image? Or is that something we shouldn’t do?
That’s call watermark.
Menu> Settings> Watermarks
Just turn it off from your module to set the behavior as the default, or add &ewm=`0` to your snippet call for runtime setting if you only want that on some selected galleries.

That solution works for enlargements but not slideshows. I’ve disabled watermark settings and used &ewm=`0` in my smoothgallery slideshow snippet call, as well as synchronized and cleared cache several times, but the watermark remains.
Edit: A workaround is to just remove the text "e2g" in watermarks settings.
hmm... you’re right.
I
missed that thing for slideshow.

I see where thumbnails can be ordered by: date_added, last_modified, comments, filename, name, random.
What would really be useful IMHO, is to have an option to assign each image an actual number to sort by. That way a client could have complete control over the appearance of thumbnails in each gallery.
BTW, my client is extremely happy with this module. Kudos on a great gallery system!
