One resource responding to multiple formats?

What would be the best way in MODx to achieve something like this...

http://www.example.com/resource
http://www.example.com/resource.xml
http://www.example.com/resource.json
http://www.example.com/resource.pdf

Is it possible to have one resource respond to multiple formats? Would it need an .htaccess rule that splits the formatting and passes it over?

Would you need to go as far as having a resource for each of the formats?

You can do that with a plugin OnPageNotFound that fetches the right resource and formats it. I believe that's how InstantAPI works, which will return it as json for you: https://modx.com/extras/package/instantapi

Using htaccess to route it directly to an existing endpoint, rather than relying on the page not found event, might be a tad more performant.

Using the .htaccess method, what would happen to the Content Type header? Can that be overridden or set again in a template?
