First, I apologize if I’m posting this in the wrong area.
I am looking to move an existing website from a variety of web applications to one content management system, like Modx. I haven’t decided on any particular one, but Modx was suggested to me. Our site is going to need several, separate blogs, forums, podcasting, multiple user roles, a way to post documents (like Word documents) in an organized manner, possibly the ability to post classified ads, and maybe a calender for posting public events.
I have come to the conclusion that every CMS is capable of all this, but some make it easier than others. So my questions are: How feasible is this in Modx? How much custom code would it require? How maintainable is it, so if it’s working, I can mostly just pass it off to someone else that may not know as much?
Thank you!
jd,
This would take some work up-front. But I think any expandable site like this would whether you used Joomla, Drupal, SilverStripe, etc.
I think MODx will give you the best chance to do all of the things you want in a custom manner- design, user-roles, future features.
User Roles - MODx has got you covered here
Seperate Blogs - you can do this with either NewsPublisher or FDM
Forums - there are a few bridges to popular forums to keep the users in sync
Podcasting - You could do this with either Ditto + TVs or MODCast
Post Documents - this could be done with eForm 2 Db, NewsPublisher, or a customized ppp
Classifieds Ads - this could also be done with NewsPublisher and views could be done with Ditto
Calendar - there are multiple ways to do this. I’ve been using Google to manage my calendars. You could use their API to let users add events. There is a good Google calendar snippet. There are other MODx calendar snippets or you could embed another calendar into MODx (probably most work).
