I’ve got a similar situation and I very much appreciate the advice here. I’m just trying to decide the best way. Do I understand that with the .htaccess method I would be able to type in the exact URLs as they appear at the moment and ’force’ a ridirect but with the plug in method it will only redirect to a set page?
Many thanks
IMO the plug in method will give you a handy interface to manage the redirects (via a TV in each document to set the aliases).

My old website was .asp depending on your needs you could either redirect *.asp to index.php providing the page names stay the same in MODx or you can use rewrite rules to transfer mypageaboutshops.asp to aboutshops.html
RewriteRule ^/(?!(?:manager|assets)/)(.*)\.asp(?:\?(.*))?$ /index.php?q=$1?2&$2: [NC,L,U]
Hope that helps.
