I am halfway through the Revolution setup. When I get to the Connection character set I get this message:
Checking database: MODX could not create your database. Please manually create your database and then try again.
I have set to utf8, and utf8_general_ci. I have gone into phpMyAdmin and the server connection collation is set to utf8_geberal_ci so not sure why I am getting this message? Any help appreciated please
On many servers, you have to create the MODX database yourself before running Setup. This is because the host doesn't allow databases to be created in code.
Yes. The error probably means that you gave the wrong name for the database in Setup. Hosts often add a prefix to the name you entered. You can see the true name of the DB in cPanel. While you're there, double-check the database username as well and make sure you created a database user with full rights to the DB.
I have checked my control panel. The database host is correct, the database login and password is correct. When I hit test I get :
Connecting to database server: Success!
- Checking MySQL server version: OK! Running: 5.5.46-0+deb7u1-log
- Checking MySQL client version: OK! Running: 5.0.11-20120503-$Id:15d5c781cfcad91193dceae1d2cdd127674ddb3e$
Set Connection char set and collation to utf8, utf8_general_ci and still get the error. phpMyAdmin is set for utf8_general_ci. I really don't understand where the error is as all info is entered correctly?

Ok got past this issue, created an administrator user name and password and then got hit with this message:

Thank you Sottwell. I have returned to the setup this morning and I now cannot get to the setup page because of this message:
FATAL ERROR: MODX Setup cannot continue.
To use PHP 5.3.0+, you must set the date.timezone setting in your php.ini. Please do set it to a proper timezone before proceeding. A list can be found here.
I have a php.ini file in my root, and in my setup file with the following line in:
date.timezone = Europe/London
So I am not sure why I cannot proceed?
