Client has strato hosting - I've tried to install a number of times, tried uploading files again

    Error on /setup page:
FATAL ERROR: MODX Setup cannot continue.
Make sure your /xxxx/xxxx/xxx/xx/xxxxxxxx/htdocs/preview/core/cache directory exists and is writable by the PHP process.

I've tried changing permissions (inc. making core/cache 777) but nothing seems to work. Rest of permissions should be the usual 755 / 644.

Contact Strato hosting support a couple of times which has been pretty much useless to date.

Second: 755 is probably correct. It could be an issue with the ownership of the directory rather than its permission setting.

Thanks for the reply BobRay, will look into that, my main problem is there's very little control on the hosting - no file browser to expand files / change permissions etc. so I had to upload everything with FTP/Dreamweaver. I could see if the hosting will allow me to use SSH / Terminal - not something I tend to use unless I really have to, but I understand with SSH that permissions can be changed in one go (i.e. to make all folders 755 / all files 644).

Another option, if I uploaded the zipped file and extracted using SSH maybe that would mean the files would have the correct ownership - having been written/extracted on the server instead of individually uploaded?

        thanks again

It's worth a try. I wouldn't use a host that didn't provide decent webmaster tools, or accept a client with a site on such a host, but I understand that sometimes you get stuck.
