I have had five attempts at installing 2.4.2-pl each time after deleting all on the server. I receive this error which, is well beyond my grasp of this package.

Is this an upgrade? It looks like you may have an e-commerce add-on that's causing trouble.
What version of MODX are you upgrading from?

There was a version of Modx about 2.1. But as I was creating a new site I decided to delete every thing and start fresh. I did check and there was no evidence of files and with an empty data base I was hoping for a clean instal.

Managed to sort this out. Seems that the copy of modx was corrupted in some way.
I removed every thing from the server and after a substantial pause (noted in the past that the server can be slow to update files) downloaded a fresh copy of 2.4.2-pl. Now working. Mike
