    Hi,

I'm a GIMP user and like it.
However, I'm curious to know if Photoshop Elements offers advantages over GIMP, notably in terms of speed and productivity.

I'm thinking to common tasks. For instance:

    1. clipping, which can sometimes be time consuming and difficult (eg. hairs).
    2. creating round shaped pictures with a colored border

I'm not especially interested in special features like editing RAW images or editing 16bit/channel images; I've more basic needs.

Task one (clipping) can of course be done in Gimp.
Task two (round pictures) can be done in Scribus for instance.
So, my question is less what can be done, but how easy and fast it can be done.

I'm aware that some of you may be more accustomed to Photoshop's or GIMP's interface and that can skew the comparison. So, I would like this thread not being like a battle between the two softwares, but a place to tell -apart from price- what you like more in Gimp or Photoshop Elements and why.

I insist for the comparison being done between Gimp and the Elements version of Photoshop (and not the full version).

    Thanks.

I use Gimp these days, and am generally happy with it. Something that you can do in Photoshop (and I'm pretty sure in Photoshop Elements as well) is to crop and resize in a single operation - for instance, my standard photo size on a web page is 600 x 400 pixels. I have to remember to go to Scale Image before exporting for web, which is a bit annoying. No doubt it could be scripted, but I don't want to get distracted with learning the ins and outs of Gimp scripting.

      ;-) KP
      • Round-shaped pictures with colored borders are easily done in pure CSS.

I agree. However, I see 3 reasons why to make round pictures with an image editor:

          1. designing a website before coding it
          2. some old browsers not supporting rounded corners
          3. minimizing image size: blank areas take require less storage

Photoshop Elements doesn't cost much (~80$) and could be worth if it increases productivity. So, my question is: Does Photoshop Elements increase productivity as compared to GIMP (and if yes in which situations)?
