How to upgrade a MODx site with a relocated core and/or renamed manager?

I followed the hardening instructions on this page: https://rtfm.modx.com/revolution/2.x/administering-your-site/security/hardening-modx-revolution and it seems to have worked great. Now I wondering, when it comes time to upgrade to the next version of MODx, what is the proper procedure to follow with the upgrade, seeing that everything has been moved/renamed? Am I over thinking this?

If I remember correctly, the installer asked me where the core was because it couldn't find it initially. Once I input the path, the update went as it regularly does.
