@DOCUMENT operation

I’m sorry for a newbie question but I am having trouble with the @DOCUMENT binding. I have tried placing @DOCUMENT 12 in a TV in document 11 but just the text "@DOCUMENT 12" shows up in the rendered page. I thought that maybe the binding had to reside alone in the TV so I deleted my other content and got the same result. Can someone help me understand what I am doing wrong? Under what conditions will the binding be replaced with the contents of the document?

is it input-type text or rich-text?

The TV in document 11 is rich text. When I select None from the Editor to Use drop-down, the container still shows just @DOCUMENT 12.

Also, is doc 12 actually published?

Yes, both documents involved are published.
