Unable to load the homepage in the manager to edit it - all I get is a blank page. In the server logs I get a php error.

Babel seems to work fine on all other pages, I can open, edit create translation pages etc.
what is the problem?
Now I have some other strangeness going on, I'm getting an error in modx log:
[2015-08-17 12:00:22] (ERROR @ /index.php) Could not prepare context: backoffice
THERE IS NO "BACKOFFICE" context!! not in the switcher plugin , not in .htaccess, not in any of the context settings.
It only happens when I try to switch to the FR context...
arrgghh.
