I'm planning to to upgrade modx on live server. I do need to backup files and database. According to the tutorial, it seems that I need to make the zip file from the server. I do believe that it's possible in C-panel. However, the server that I have is not allow to do zip or unzip on their file manager at all. Any suggestion on how to package mode x files? I use Filezilla and Transmit as the FTP tools.

    Thank you.

Does your cPanel have BackUp Wizard?
It creates a backup of the server and database and stores a copy above the root as .tar.gz and you can download a copy to your local computer.

Another option would be with SSH. However — I have one hosting account where zipping via SSH is allowed, but unzipping is not.

Bob Ray's FAQ may be helpful: http://bobsguides.com/modx-upgrade-faq.html

Updating MODx — in particular — doing the merging of directories could get tricky. MODx docs at my last read suggests using an FTP application, but I have not been able to accomplish it, and I usually resort to SSH commands to handle the merge.

I have some sites with Skytoaster, which use Softaculous for installs and updates. Faster and filled with less anxiety.:)

If the site isn't too big, you can use Vapor to package the important bits. And as far as easy upgrade, you can try the install.php script. https://github.com/sottwell/installer

Also, again if the site isn't too big, the old Evo bckupMODx add-on works great with one modification to correct the path to Revo's config.inc.php file. http://modx.com/extras/package/bkupmodx

Thanks Sottwell, when you said if the site isn't too big. How can I know if it's THAT big? Currently, the site use Modx 2.2.10 traditional. I'm curious if I should upgrade to the closest one that fix the serious bug issues ex. 2.2.15 or upgrade to latest new one.

          Thank you.
