A lot of people may well jump on this comment but thats their prerogative
The best way to upgrade, in my opinion, is to clear the server of all files.
Meaning - if the root is where the site is installed - ensure all files in the root have been deleted.
The same goes if the system has been installed into a folder - delete all files in that folder
This way you can ensure that none of the original files cause problems
Step 2 would be to cross reference all of the original snippets etc. to ensure you don't lose any files that don't belong in the default installation e.g. PDFs, Images, custom code etc.
A lot of people simply FTP the new files to the server so that the old files are overwritten - there is no guarantee that the files are overwritten - I speak from experience

I have done the zip file and moved it to the new location, following your concise directions and the problem is now solved.
