Are all my bases covered with the Backup facility included in MODx install, or are there more comprehensive utilities/procedures?

Also, what’s a prudent backup frequency?

    Thanks,
    Wendy

The MODx backup facility is focused on just backing up the MODx MySQL database. That’s not a bad start but it misses backing up all the files associated with your website and any additional databases you may have added. If you want both your database(s) and your files then the MODx resource BkupMODx ( http://modxcms.com/BkupMODx-2073.html ) is designed to backup your website into a single zip file.

Regarding the frequency of backup, that will vary depending you the frequency and volume of changes to your website content. A website that changes infrequently, doesn’t allow postings from visitors, and doesn’t track statistics can get by with once a month or once a quarter. A high volume website might do well with a hourly or daily backups.

Thanks, Chuck. BkupMODx offers too many options for a numbskull like me - what’s a good base-options configuration? (BTW, no visitor postings, minor updates weekly maybe, stats tracking taken care of elsewhere.)

Use the Manager’s backup option to backup the database, and download any of the folders in /assets/ that you’ve made changes to, such as assets/images and assets/templates. Also assets/snippets, etc, if you’ve customized any of the snippets, plugins, or modules there. You should also have a copy of your manager/includes/config.inc.php file. Create a folder on your desktop, put these downloaded folders and files there along with the downloaded .sql file from the database backup, and zip it up with an appropriate name... domain-date.zip is good. If nothing changes, you don’t need to do any more backups. At most, if you’ve just edited documents, do a database backup when you’re finished. It takes less than a minute, and if nothing else changes, that’s all you need. If you’ve added images for the documents, make sure to keep a copy of them around too. Works for me  wink
