    Hi

    Wondering if anyone can help.

    I’m using Modx and the site is running fine but I get a 500 internal server error every time I try to log in to manager. I’ve contacted the web host who say its a problem with Modx - the generic response I got was:

    "This is most likely caused by your scripts running into one or more of the resource limits that we impose for all shared hosting. Here are the limits for your reference. Once any one of the limits are reached, the responsible script(s) are automatically stopped and the 500 error gets thrown. Please optimize your scripts relative to memory usage and CPU time

    I haven’t made any changes (the site has been running fine for over a year) but my web host did go down last week and when it came back the site was displaying fine but got the manager login error.

    Anyone know what the problem could be?

    Many thanks for your help in advance.

      Did you always had this issue or is it new ?

      I don’t think your host is on target here, it’s not a memory or CPU issue MODx is efficient in this regard. Default memory limit is generally 8Mb and MODx runs fine with this.

      I suspect it has something to do with cookies or sessions, since the login page uses them and I can’t see any other explanation for this.

      Now about your host limitations : what are they ?
      We need more info. Since you can’t login in the manager, you’ll have to create a phpinfo file manually :

      1) With your favorite text editor, create a file and put this code in it :

      <?php
      phpinfo();
      ?>

      2) Save it, name it info.php or whatever

      3) Upload it somewhere safe (not at the root, preferably in a folder with a index.html file so that people can’t list the directory and see your config unless they have the adress you’ll give us).

      4) Come back here an post the adress, so that we can check your server config.

        Just a thought... do you use rewrite rules ?
        If so, did you rename ht.access into .htaccess for the manager ?

          Thanks for the help guys much appreciated!

          "I suspect it has something to do with cookies or sessions, since the login page uses them and I can’t see any other explanation for this."
          - I have tried from multiple computers and still get the same error

          This is a new issue since the host went down.

          We do use rewrite rules for friendly URL’s.

          "If so, did you rename ht.access into .htaccess for the manager ?"

          Just checked that and the file was still named ht.access have - changed this to .htaccess but still unable to login. If I put an incorrect user or password in it does give an incorrect user or password message instead of the 500 error.

          I have uploaded a info.php file but I’m not sure if it’s safe to put on a public forum?

            You don’t need an info.php file; in the Manager go to Reports -> System Info, and click on the View link for phpinfo.

            Scroll to the bottom, to the block for environment/server information, and look through it to see what it’s reporting for the various paths and urls and such.

              My understanding was flashman can’t login into the manager, thus the need for the phpinfo Susan tongue

              Just don’t leave it once the problem is solved and I don’t think you’ll have any problem...

                    OK - Think I have found my problem - my database size is too large for my web host. Can I delete the event logs via phpmyadmin to get some space back as this seems to take up the majority of the space?

                      Yes, you can. The find out what’s causing so many errors to be logged.
