I placed this where the Profile tag used to be, which is directly above the Profile tag near the opening <body> tag.

Leave out the dot. It will be added automatically. Also, make sure a user is logged in in the *front end*. When previewing from the Manager, you're not logged in in the front end.

I almost never preview from the Manager.

I made the changes

[[!setUserPlaceholders? &prefix=`ce`]]

but the problem persists.

For logged-in users there is no "User not found" alert, but neither is the field/value being rendered despite that it exists in the classExtender table.

For non-members (the public) the "User not found" alert persists as does the missing field/value.

It only seems to work with the Profile tag which inevitably leads to the field being recreated in the Extended Fields tab. [ed. note: todd.b last edited this post 11 years, 3 months ago.]

Are you sure the setUserPlaceholders tag is above the placeholders themselves and executing before they are parsed? If anything is in a chunk, the caching settings could be making the snippet run after the placeholders are parsed.

[[!setUserPlaceholders]] is definitely above all the placeholders. The tag and placeholders are all in the template, not in any chunks.

Does this tag on its own (outside the If tag), display anything:

It does work for logged-in members.

But for non-members it still throws the "User not found" and also no placeholder.

That's because you're not sending a user id in the tag so it's using the ID of the currently logged-in user. If no one is logged in, there's no way for it to know who to look for.

Ok. Is that possible to do with classExtender or do I have to use the Profile tag instead?

Also, since the placeholder works outside of the If tag does that mean they are incompatible?

No snippet can display the profile data (or any data at all) for a user who is not logged in. If you think about it, it doesn't make any sense. Until the user logs in, they are truly "anonymous" and there's no way to look up information about them. Once they log in, either Profile or setUserPlaceholders will display the data for you, but only setUserPlaceholders will get the data in the custom table (in addition to the profile).
