    Hi!

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask. But hopefully this will go to the right place.

I’ve got a sit up and running. Well, still in testing but ready to be opened. Now I’m thinking more ways to extend MODx.

The forum engine we use is YaBB (2.2.1) and our user management is there. I’m not going to duplicate all users to MODx webuser db because we have around 1800 users there. I need somehow to bond these two applications together. I’ve decided to try to replace MODx webuser management with YaBB user management.

Here is where I need help. So far I can check if YaBB user is logged in, what group he/she is in and if the session is ok. Somehow I need to get the web user groups in MODx to match user groups in YaBB. For example we have basic users (basic board) and members (extended boards). What I’d like to do is give the members extended acces on our MODx site.

I’m not quite sure, if I shoud create a snippet or a plugin or a module for this? Or do I have to modify some code?

Why not just add a snippet to the pages you want to give them access to that simply calls $modx->sendUnauthorizedPage() if they don’t have a valid YaBB session and group membership?

Well... I’ve been usin MODx for about one moth, so I didn’t know such feature existed. And also I’ve been struggling in another (badly coded) php software trying to get it to work so I wasn’t expecting such features in MODx.

I have to say, MODx keeps surprising me all the time. And the upcoming looks even better.

        Thanks.

Stumbled upon a new problem. How can I do this with the menus?

My page structure is (the members section)

          Members

          • About (public)
          • Some hidden (members only)
          • Some other hidden (members only)
          • Some downloads (members only)

I know I’m being lazy here for not looking around.

I thought you would be enticing the lower-grade members by having all the pages in the menu and simply restricting access; that’s why I suggested the approach I did.

If you want to use the existing menu snippets to do that, you would need to either modify their code or synchronize the users/groups from YaBB (using plugins and potentially a module or CLI script to do occasional cleanups or batch operations), as the default menu snippets use that information to show/hide links based on permissions.

There are other options, like using a simple snippet to display different chunks based on the YaBB data you are accessing.

              Hi!

I was just wondering. If I decide to do the hard job and create a syncronizer between YaBB and MODx, would there be any use for it in the community? I haven’t decided this yet, but this might be the best solution in my case.

As I’ve said I’m new with MODx and things are a bit confusing so I need some directions. Where could I find some help in creating a plugin or a module? I think this should be module. Is there available any bridges or similar between other forum softwares? I’ve seen a SMF(?) bridge here somewhere. I’m just thinking of taking some hint from those modules.

              Thanks in advance.
