How to create an individual TV Tag/Value count in Articles?

Hi All,

We're outputting a bunch of articles into an articles container page in the normal way. Each article has various drop down and checkbox TVs. We allow the web visitor to filter articles listings by providing a few hard coded links, e.g. site_url/?tag=Widgets&key=Blue and this returns a filtered list through [[+articles]] using the TV values.

We need a count for these results, which we can do easily for the whole number of articles, but are struggling to think of a solution for the filtered results - Other than creating a snippet with a getCount on the Template Variable Content table with matching "keys" from the url string. We also saw "Accessing Template Variable Values via the API" https://rtfm.modx.com/revolution/2.x/making-sites-with-modx/customizing-content/template-variables/accessing-template-variable-values-via-the-api and wondered if that could be adapted, but are concerned of trawling inefficiently through huge amounts of table data to do something which seems like it should be simple.

Are the user's choices available in the $_POST array? If so, maybe a custom snippet could get the values and use $modx->getCount() to set placeholders with the totals.

Currently the values are not POSTed, just in the links, so I guess they'd only be available by GET? From what you are saying, Bob, using a GetCount on the values is possible and wouldn't be too laborious?

Yes, $_GET should work if they're in the URL. getCount() won't be too laborious at all (it's a single query and a fairly fast one) unless you have to call it a bunch of times for one page load.
