I love MODx. I truly feel it is one of the best CMSs out there. I know most of you feel the same way.

At the place I work, I've been fighting to keep MODx as the platform of choice for a while now, trying to steer the boss away from adopting the "W" one. And, so far, I've been winning (by a thread) because of all the problems WordPress gives us with the WP sites we do have to work on (clients coming in with WP already running on their sites), for various reasons; security issues being the biggest of the problems.

So, I pick up a copy of Website Magazine (June 2015) and on page 14 is an article featuring the top 50 CMSs. Guess what is NOT on that list? Not even down at the 50th position.

I don't think there's a bias against the platform since it wasn't even mentioned by them anywhere in the article. Not even an explanation why it wasn't considered at all. It's as if they didn't even know MODx existed. The list was populated by systems I never even heard of. Of course, they placed WordPress as number 1.

Why is that? MODx should be a household name by now. Why isn't it? It's not the quality of MODx. In fact, I find the latest version to be blazing fast and much more dependable. So, my gripe is not about the quality of MODx.

Hell, I'm even finding that these forums have slowed down over the last year or so. What's going on?

Apparently it's a yearly article they publish. I found the 2013 version online and they had MODx listed in position 25. I have no doubt many people will contact the editor about this (hope so).

Haven't read that article, but I've read several reviews that tend to leave out systems that are framework oriented. MODX is great for developers and site admins, and it's built for the very purpose of giving site designers and developers more flexible control. I think the reason it gets less love that we think it should is because some of these CMS reviews focus on the systems that provide the easiest editing interface for non-coders, not necessarily the best backend structure.

Honestly, if someone could develop a really stunning front-end editing system for MODX (which I wish I was skilled enough to do) I think you'd see a lot more love sent our way. We are lacking a bit in the "idiot-proof" feature department.

The answer is simple: MODX stagnates, hovewer it' s unpleasant to recognize it.

As a non-programmer I love it and can do a lot of interesting stuff but our programmers are constantly going on about:

              • EXT-js (in regard to developing Manager extras/interfaces)
              • No common framework like Laravel and no plans to bother with that type of framework (which disappointed them so they're looking at OctoberCMS)

That said, our programmers currently like it much better than Drupal/WordPress (and of course Joomla) but as mentioned are beginning to look elsewhere the more complex projects get and they seem to love Laravel or Yii.

Also, one of the great strengths of MODX, it's templating system and overall workflow are so flexible I suspect many don't know where to start when trying it out. It took me (back in the Evo days) quite a while to "get" how it all worked before it became, at the time, the only choice.
