The :pthumb output modifier is just that...an output modifier. It modifies the output of MODX tags, such as snippet or TV tags. You can use it as a snippet, in which case you give it the path to the image as a property.
[[!pthumb? &input=`assets/images/image.jpg` &options=`&w=640&h=480&zc=0&aoe=0&far=0`]]
