I was contacted by my client the other day when he couldn’t upload some Word documents to a subdirectory under assets. I tried to upload them and got the following error:

    File type: application/msword, 39 KB
Uploading of this kind of file isn’t allowed!

I tried a pdf in the same folder, and got the same error, except it was for a pdf and not Word. I tried a jpg and again got a similar error. So it appears I can’t upload anything using the File Manager.
During my troubleshooting, I tried to upload the same files to the root asset directory as well as other directories under assets with no success.

I transferred the files up just fine using a FTP client. I checked the folder permissions and ’write’ is allowed. The Manager also says the folder is writable. Directory writable? Yes.

I checked the Configuration settings to make sure there wasn’t an issue there, and it doesn’t appear there is.

    Tools>Configuration>Interface and Features
    Uploadable Media Types
    mp3,wav,au,wmv,avi,mpg,mpeg,rtf,ppt,doc,docx

    Uploadable Image Types
    jpg,jpeg,png,gif,psd,ico,bmp

    Tools>Configuration>File Manager
    Uploadable File Types
    txt,php,html,htm,xml,js,css,cache,zip,gz,rar,z,tgz,tar,htaccess,mp3,mp4,aac,wav,au,wmv,avi,mpg,mpeg,pdf,doc,xls,txt,ppt,rtf,docx

    Security>Manager Users>(Checked all users)
Uploadable Image Types, Uploadable Media Types, Uploadable File Types are all set to "Use System Configuration"

I’m at a loss, especially since as recently as a couple of weeks ago everything worked fine and uploads were no problem. I haven’t changed any settings.

I had a similar issue, if they are using a non admin account you need to paste in the filetypes into the user settings. Seems to be a bug, the check box for "use system configuration" not working.

That would make sense if it worked when I did it, but not when he did, as I definitely have an admin account...he does too. But, I’ll paste them over there and see if it makes a difference. Thanks...
