And in the member’s directory I need for members to be able to vote on and rate pics. How should I go about this?

I would suggest starting with looking at WebloginPE

To create a "private" access area to your website you need to:
        1) create a web user group and a document group,
        2) assign the document to the document group.

Then to grant a user permission to view this document you need to include user to the web user group that has access to the "private" document group.

This is covered in the documentation and you can see it in action with the demo site.

Then use WebLogin to handle the login processing of web users.

For the image voting I think that you can use the AnythingRating snippet.

So I can put cms into a non passprotected directory, and that way some parts of the site can be member protected, and some won’t be?

Right now I have modx loaded to a pass protected folder...

Yes, MODx has full document/user management for creating private sections to your website (or the entire website if needed). There is an example of this in the demo site (provided with the install).

Once you setup a web document group and a web user group and create a web user (that is part of the private user group) you will only be able to access the page once logged in as the member web user. You will need to use a login snippet (either WebLogin or WebLoginPE) to process the login.

Download it and the extract it locally. Then open the doc’s folder and open up the index.html

edit: unless you mean just the regular weblogin... which I don’t know about.

WebLogin is pretty basic; just put the snippet call [!WebLogin!] wherever you want the login form to appear. There are a few parameters; they are documented in the weblogin snippet itself.

Best to set up a local development installation with the demo site; it’s got it all already set up and you can see how it works.

A good place to look for information on particular snippets is in the snippet code itself (in the manager Resources > Manage Resources and select the snippet tab, scroll down to WebLogin and look at the instructions in the snippet code). Most snippets will have usage information in the code.

Also the demo site has a working implementation of WebLogin which is a good place to see how it is setup.

There is also WebLoginPE which is a enhanced version of WebLogin.

Both of these have a dedicated sub-forum for support.
