I have .pdfs and .docs in specific directories I'd like to only make available to specific members similar to how resource groups work. I could do this the normal way but would like to able to use their MODX login for this. Anybody have an idea on how to do this. Thanks for your help.

The best way would be to store them in directories outside of the web root, then use static resources or one of the download manager extras that allows download streaming from outside of the web root. For example,
http://modx.com/extras/package/filedownloadr
You can use a snippet such as Personalize to display different sets of links to logged-in users.
