I want to build a test site but the domain name is not yet ready to be pointed. So I want to install, build and configure MODx using my cPanel domain name. Once the site is proper (or close) then I want to point the domain name and have MODx use the new domain name instead of the IP address.

I have a live site I need to leave alone till this is built, then I can port over the domain name.

Is this difficult? What steps are involved? Is this as simple as changing the config file once the domain pointing is ready?

      Presuming your using Revo

Once your ready to point it just turn on friendly url's in the manager and then log out, update the domain and paths in the core/config.inc.php file, rename the ht.access file to .htaccess and delete everything from the core cache folder, then pointing the domain's A record to the new IP address should work fine. This is how I do every go live.

This might help as well—though you may already be comfortable with the process. Correct me if I am wrong Paul. I think when I was using a temporary URL, and then wanted to switch to the live domain name I referred to the Updating your Config Files section found in the Docs: http://rtfm.modx.com/revolution/2.x/administering-your-site/moving-your-site-to-a-new-server

There are also instructions for doing this in the Skytoaster docs https://help.skytoaster.com/docs/scripts/temp-urls/ which is in line with what Paul is saying : 2. Manually update the core config file
