While reviewing Core system settings I must have accidentally removed 'default' from the manager theme field when I clicked into it to learn whether other options are available.

My manager is now an unstyled list of links. There is a system settings link, but clicking it does not refresh the page / provide access to settings.

      OK, that was fun...

In the event that anyone else in the universe can possibly make such a boneheaded move, per http://rtfm.modx.com/revolution/2.x/administering-your-site/settings/system-settings/, settings are retrieved from cache and not runtime values.

I restored the manager theme via core > cache > system_settings > config.cache.php by changing 'manager_theme' setting to "default". This restored the path for the manager theme CSS, allowing me to get back into system settings to revert the actual setting.
