    just an update. someone named felix who is my new hero, was able to look over the snippet i was using, and determine the problem, and fix it.

    my snippet had said:
    $alias = $ds[$i]['alias'];
    $split = explode(".", $alias);
    $combined = $split[2];
    $combined .= $split[0];
    $combined .= $split[1];
    $combined .= " 0800";
    $formatted = strtotime($combined );
    $pubdate = date("r", $formatted);
    $filename = 'episodes/'.$ds[$i]['alias'].'.m4a';

    if (file_exists($filename)) {
    $fileSize = filesize($filename);
    }

    and he changed it to the much more compact, elegant, and most importantly, functional:
    $alias = $ds[$i]['alias'];
    $split = explode(".", $alias);
    $pubdate = date("r", mktime(8,0,0,$split[0],$split[1],$split[2]));

    $filename = 'episodes/'.$ds[$i]['alias'].'.m4a';

    if (file_exists($filename)) {
    $fileSize = filesize($filename);
    }

    that solved my problem. since php is all greek to me, i can’t tell if that will be helpful to anyone else or not, but hopefully it will be.
