    Hi all,

I’ve used modx for over a year now...I’ve installed it probably more than a dozen times, and this is the first time it’s failed like this. I’m hosting on HostGator, and on one of the domains I host, the installer fails to connect to the database I setup. I’ve used the same method to create a database, create a db user, and assign the user to the database for ALL of my installs, so the fact that this is the only one that causes a problem is odd. The database seems to be ok, as I can pull it up in PHPMyAdmin and create/drop tables, etc.

The only thing I can figure out is that there are numbers in my site admin name, and on HostGator MySQL dbs you have to preface the database name with your admin acct name. This is the only admin name on all my domains (20+) that has numbers in it. Now I’m wondering if the numbers could be causing the modx installer to choke.

Any ideas? I’ll start poking around in the code, but figured I’d see if anyone knew anything first.

Thanks for any info or advice,
    Eric Imboden

I have had similar issues with having underscores in the database name, but thats at GoDaddy and I have no clue how they are set up as far as server config.

Never had any trouble with using underscores. HostGator’s MySQL setup (at least on shared servers) requires the admin name and an underscore as part of the database name. All my dbs have been setup that way from day one of using modx. The only thing I can see that’s different is that this domain’s admin name has numbers in it. I don’t have any content there yet, so I’m considering blowing the whole thing away on HostGator and redo without numbers in the admin name.

        Thanks for the response,
        Eric

What version are you installing? When do you get this error? I just checked the installer and did not find anything that would cause problems with numbers.

I would make sure that the host is correct. In most of the cases it is localhost but every once in a while it will be different (specially on shared hosting).

Well, looks like I have some strange stuff going on with that domain. I blew away all the database stuff and reinstalled modx and now it seems to work just fine. It could also be that I accidentally set the password on the db to something other than I thought.

Whatever the cause, it looks like it works now. Sorry for the false alarm...I’ll triple and quadruple check next time before I post.

Susan and everyone else, thanks for your support.

On rechecking the info I discovered I had updated the right file on the wrong site using ftp. I’ve now used Susan’s fix with results.

              Thanks
