Sorry nwb, I personally can’t answer your question, but I just wanted to say that I have just started wondering the same thing.
I love MODx and have been trying to work out which snippets will add networking type functionality - of which there are several. BTW I googled ’networking CMS modx’ and got some interesting articles to read but nothing definitive.
Apparently Wordpress won the 2007 award for best social networking CMS but i’d prefer to stab myself than become another Wordpress clone... another promising one looks to be elgg, and Dolphin looks interesting too.
But, i’d much prefer to use MODx if it is possible. I hope it would be with a bit of planning - for a start, can anyone tell me if there are plugins that allow multiple admin users but can hide most controls, basically just enabling a user to log in and edit a chunk or a content field on ’their page’, or preferabley only with a WYSIWYG editor and no manager? As for number of users, for my idea I am thinking of high hundreds, not really thousands. Any ideas?
I’m currently in the middle of creating a site for a large Asian magazine company (www.asia-weekly.com new version will be online in a few weeks)
with limited social functions such as member pages, access restrictions, horoscopes, forms, quote of day, directory, blog, RSS, and a massive array of
articles that are updated automatically across various levels of pages... all is going great and I highly recommend Modxcms for all of the above features.
However a large NGO recently asked for a project that basically incorporated Facebook and ebay into one large site with a mobile web platform and a
few other features. For such a large project with many custom modules we have decided to go with Drupal because of the solid architecture. Joomla
was second choice with many out of the box features but limited customization without really digging into the code. Drupal has a steep learning curve
and would not recommend to anyone except those that have no choice (large apps).
I believe that in a few years or when Modxcms gets to V1.0 I would be able to buld the NGO website with modx...but modx is not there yet. It is stable and
very good for all small to mid size projects right now...just not the extra large ones.
Modx allows you to customize and add whatever you would like...if you are going to get into a CMS system this is the one to grow with. As backed up
by the recent award as ’most promising CMS’
If you are just after a blog then use Wordpress. But if you plan on expanding your blog in the future with more apps then stick with Modx

While it might seem like an attractive solution, Doplhin is heavy as hell, it’s clutterware with a complicated admin and a nigtmare to template... I’d stay away from it.
Social networking has very few options but the best bet overall would still be
Elgg. It has shortcomings but to me it’s the best compromise. You can also check
DotNode out, it’s promising. I had great hopes about
AroundMe but it has totally changed direction and now I am not sure what to make of it...
I still wait for the killer social networking app, though... with 0.9.7 maybe someone will build a social networking distro of MODx

sorry, did i get this right, does modxcms have its own blog software built in?
I should probably know this if I’m using it but only just started using it so am a little clueless...
Thanks
