Manager Screens not displayed correctly in Development Site

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to create a development site that mirrors my production site.
I have already received some assistance in another thread but I have progressed past that problem so I decided to start a new thread with the current problem.

Development Machine

I'm have installed Modx Revo version 2.2.6-PL which is the same version production. I copied the setup folder off the production server and ran it. Setup connected to my local My local MYSQL db no problem. This was restored from a dump.sql file.

The server is running Debian Wheezy. Apache is version 2.2.22 and PHP is Version 5.4.4-14+deb7u3.

All the static files that make up my web pages were copied off production into development using FTP.
I have done a file compare of the contents of all files and nothing seems to be corrupted.

The production server was in a subdirectory (secret web server business)
My development server is in the root directory (/var/www/)

The Problem now.

The Manager Screen Doesn't load properly.
Really simple text boxes come up in my browser but there isn't any formatting.
I can see where the problem is if I view the source code in my browser.
The lines that start like this href="/assets/ext3/resources
Have a leading slash in front of them. I think this should just be a relative path.
i.e. href="assets/ext3/resources...
Similar to the src=" lines further down.

If I look at my production site it looks like this href="/manager/assets/ext3/resources which kind of blows my relative path theory.

I have been back through and double checked my .htaccess file in the root dir but can see any problems.
I have attached it in case it helps. I have commented out the RewriteBase / line but it didn't make any difference.
I don't have a .htaccess file in the /manager directory.

Any Ideas why this mucking up the URL's?

Small Progress.
I have changed my config.inc.php
From this

Now I have changed the config to be similar to what I have in production.
Strange that it is different to the other definitions in this file where "Manager" seems to be specified twice.

Now the Manager Login Page Displays correctly but once I log in the next screen is all plain text.
Just a list of URL's down the screen with no formatting. Nothing does much.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before?

Update:

The only thing I can see is some 404's in the Access log.
Nothing new in the Error log when I load the Manager Page.

Hi there,

Welcome to MODX! I think I see what's going wrong for you.

You will need to modify your config.inc.php back to original. All that which you added or changed, is completely unnecessary. Because your other site was in a subfolder, you may have to take that subfolder path out of the config files that you took from your subfolder installation. A new install in root however shouldn't show the subfolder path in any of these files. It really depends on if you replaced them with the config files from the subfolder site after you installed MODX in the root of your new server.

Check all of the config files referenced here http://rtfm.modx.com/revolution/2.x/administering-your-site/moving-your-site-to-a-new-server (about half way down you'll find all the config file paths) to make sure that the subfolder is not shown (the installation would have automatically added this to the config files for the subfolder site).

Uncomment the rewrite base in the .htaccess file, this is necessary for FURLs, assuming you have that turned on. Make sure that you template head contains <base href="[[++site_url]]" /> if you're using FURLs. More information can be found here: http://rtfm.modx.com/revolution/2.x/administering-your-site/using-friendly-urls (follow the steps on this page exactly, FURLs will work out of the gate).

After all this, go to the core/cache folder and delete all the files contained within. If, when you open the manager after this you still see any kind of blank page, go into the database table system_settings, locate compress_css and compress_js and set both to 0. Again, delete the files in core/cache and it should be happy again.

If after you do the above you still have issues, do let us know and we'll go from there.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I'll follow these steps and let you know how I get on.
It may take me a few days to get to it as this job gets pushed aside by other more important stuff.

I have followed your advice and gone back through the config.inc.php and I couldn’t find any settings with sub folders. I changed the modx_manager_url back to $modx_manager_url= '/';

“The How to move your site” document was one that I have already followed but I have been back through it.

I have uncommented the rewrite base in .htaccess file.
I can’t follow the FURL document you mention as it uses the management screens that I can’t get to load properly.

I have removed all files under the core/cache folder and restarted the apache2 service.

The manager login screen still fails to load correctly. This is pretty much as expected as this seems the same as the configuration I have tried already.

I have checked the the compress_css and compress_js settings and they were both already set to 0. This was advice I followed in a previous thread. (Specified above)

The manager login screen does not display correctly. (see attached)
My actual web pages do display fairly well. The only problem I see straight off is that my thumbnail pictures aren’t displayed. I think they use something called phpthumbsof but I haven’t looked much into that yet.

Here are the 404's I see when I try and display my manager login screen.
Clearly the it is looking for things in the root folder when is should be looking in the manager folder

I'm at a bit of a loss now.

Did you look at the other config files listed in the rtfm? Specifically:

/config.core.php
/connectors/config.core.php
/manager/config.core.php

Hi Frogabog,
Yes I have checked those files. They are quite small and have the correct paths in them.

/var/www/config.core.php
Looks like this

The above was all cut and paste so I'd say the files are identical.
The original files I transferred from the production system had paths matching the sub folders in production.

The file /var/www/.htaccess has the following lines uncommented. There are no .htaccess files in any sub folders.

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

I loaded the manager logon screen in my browser again and here are all the access.log entries.
(nothing in the error log)
It starts off OK looking in the /manager folder then about half way down it starts looking for the css files in the wrong place. All those files do exist under the /manager folder except for favicon.ico which doesn't exist at all.

Any ideas what could be going wrong here?

UPDATE
After going and finding the login.tpl file here /var/www/manager/templates/default/security/
I realised that this is the code that has the inconsistent URL's in the browser source listing for the login page.
When I view the source for the logon page and click on the links, the links with "config.manager_url" in front of them don't work and the links with a straight relative path do work. So this tells me there is still something wrong with the setting config.manager_url from the config.inc.php file.

I tried taking the trailing slash off /var/www/manager but that didn't help. It totally broke the page so I put it back.
I then took the / out of the modx_manager_url as shown below.

The manager page appears to work now although I obviously haven't tested everything.

The question now is why is this different from what the documents tell me to do?
Also what does this mean for all the other url settings that contain just '/' in the config.inc.php?
