Is it possible to rename the index.php located within the root directory?
I imagine you could if you rewrote the .htaccess file, though I've never tried it.

You would also need to change the web server's index to whatever you renamed the index.php file to so that it would be recognized as the "default" when the URL only has the domain. Make sure to use the .htaccess file in the /manager/ directory to set its index back to index.php.
DirectoryIndex whatever.php

I was able to change the root index.php file name by updating the "request_controller" setting within "System Settings", and then changing the physical file name via the file manager.
I'm surprised that would work without changing either the DirectoryIndex setting or the FURLs section of .htaccess.
