Hi, I am setting up a new site that needs some tagging (mostly newsarticles type of pages).

I noticed that MODx has an Auto-tag and Tag TV, but there is not al lot of documentation about those. I guess they work with tagLister. I also noticed the SmartTag and Tagger extras which seem to be seperate solutions.

Is there maybe a comparison somewhere of the Pro and Cons of each solution?
Or can someone recommend a taggin solution for a small site (e.g. the Tagger statement of supporting millions of tags is overkill for this site) ?

      Cheers

Since not having a good reason to use one of the 3rd party extras I decided to just use the built in Autotag TV with the TagLister extra which seems to work for me. I did try Tagger, but I did not see an advantage over the built in solution. Did not try SmartTags.

I am not using Articles as a blogging solution. I tried it a long time ago and didn't really like it (don't recall exactly why). I am currently using Collections with GetResources for the "Articles" with the MODx tagging system for tags and some extra TVs for additional categorizing.

Tagger holds its data in a separate table. The TagLister data is held buried deep in a TV.

If you need to use the tags in some other way than TagLister provides then it'll be easier to get them out of a table than json in a TV.

I've given up on Articles. I thinks it's too dangerous to rely on such a large piece of functionality that may not be supported and you're left up a blind alley. I'd rather build my blogging solutions using a bundle of extras since they're not all likely to go unsupported simultaneously.

And a lot faster (though I've never used Tagger).

Not only that, but using your own blogging solution lets you use other excellent packages, like pdoTools and ModxTalks. It would be easy enough to set up a generic blog system that you like, then use MyComponent to make a package out of it to quickly set up on any site where you want it.
