    Hello,

    I’m new to Modx. I have managed to edit the left table of the site, but I can not find where to edit the right side, unless I delete it from the raw code. I know there has to be a way to edit this using one of the editors. The part I’m talking about has "Home" and the validation links.

    Also, I want to use the site for teachers, parents and students to be able to write articles. However I would want to approve the articles before they are posted. Is this possible? If so, would someone tell me how to accomplish this?

    Finally, I would like the layout to have 3 colums across. Any help with this would also be much appreciated. If instructions have been posted for any of this, please provide me with a link, as I have been unable to locate it.

    Thanks for taking the time to look, and your help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks. wink

      Hello,

      Thank you for the help. I’ve looked through the documentation, and I can not find how to edit the right side of the page where it has the css and xhtml validation link. The only way that I can edit that section is by editing the core code. Not to be ungrateful, but if I have to do that, it would be much easier for me to code my own pages then to debug existing code.

      If there is anyway to edit the section I’m referring to other than editing the core code, please let me in on it....lol . I’m sure that there must be a way to do this, but I have yet to find it.

      Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

        See also the site in my sig.

        It has an introduction to the MODx Manager which might give you some insight on how to work with MODx.

          Are you referring to the sample pages? Just change the templates!

          After all, MODx gives you complete freedom to design whatever you want to: Create your own template. You don’t have to use/change the existing ones.

          A very simple, basic template could look like this:

          <html>
          <head>
          <base href="[(site_url)]" />
          <title> [*pagetitle*] | [(site_name)]</title>
          </head>
          <body>
          [*content*]
          </body>
          </html>

          You might want to read the docs to fully understand how MODx works.
          http://modxcms.com/documentation.html
          Maybe start with the "Designer’s Guide" to see how templates work: http://modxcms.com/designer-guide.html
          or better yet, the "Beginner’s Guide to MODx": http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/Beginner%27s_Guide_to_MODx

          Hi,

          Right. The default template that comes with modx. I looked but didn’t see but the one template, so unless I find some to download, I can’t change the template, and it’s looking like the only way to change the column on the right is to manually edit the xhtml code, because the wysiwyg editor does not pick this up, at least I haven’t found a way yet.

          If I download a different templates, will there be sections that code will have to be manually edited?

          Thanks.

            Hi jws!

            I’m pretty new to MODx and I’m a teacher with a similar project of your (I think). Maybe we could chat about it? If you think that’s ok, just let me know.

            There’re several good templates you can use, just get a peek at
            http://www.modxcms.com/resource-listing.html&tags=site+template

            Good luck.

              As suggested earlier in this thread, be sure to read up on how MODx works before going any further.

              A template is just a kind of shell that’s used on every page, kind of like the letterhead used by a business. There are many available for download and, if you like them as is, you don’t need to edit them at all. Google for Modx Templates and you’ll find a ton of them: http://www.google.com/search?q=modx+templates&rls=com.microsoft:*&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1

              You can also modify them very easily by editing the template itself, or the .CSS code that comes with each one. To do so, you’ll have to understand HTML, CSS, and a little about how MODx works.

                With MODx you can create editable regions to be used in the template by creating a Template Variable (TV). This is one of the key features in MODx and will allow you to add any number of regions (and other editable data like images and urls). Simply add a placeholder for the TV in your template where you want the data to show and you will now have an editable region. Read up on TVs here:

                    Hi JWS

                    If you’re using the default MODx Template, you won’t be able to directly edit the right column of the site. Just because it isn’t setup for this purpose. If you have a look at the Template code you’ll find the following:
                           <div id="right-inner">
                              <h1 style="text-indent: -5000px;padding: 0px; margin:0px; font-size: 1px;">[(site_name)]</h1>
                              <div id="sidebar">
                                <h2>News:</h2>
                                [[Ditto? &startID=`2` &summarize=`2` &total=`20` &commentschunk=`Comments` &tpl=`nl_sidebar` &showarch=`0` &truncLen=`100` &truncSplit=`0`]]
                                <div id="recentdocsctnr">
                                  <h2>Most Recent:</h2>
                                  <a name="recentdocs"></a>[[ListIndexer?LIn_root=0]] </div>
                                <h2>Login:</h2>
                                <div id="sidebarlogin">[!WebLogin? &tpl=`FormLogin` &loginhomeid=`[(site_start)]`!]</div>
                                <h2>Meta:</h2>
                                <p><a href="http://validator.w3.org/check/referer" title="This page validates as XHTML 1.0 Transitional">Valid <abbr title="eXtensible HyperText Markup Language">XHTML</abbr></a></p>
                                <p><a href="http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/check/referer" title="This page uses valid Cascading Stylesheets" rel="external">Valid <abbr title="W3C Cascading Stylesheets">css</abbr></a></p>
                                <p><a href="http://modxcms.com" title="Ajax CMS and PHP Application Framework">MODx</a></p>
                              </div>
                              <!-- close #sidebar -->
                            </div>

                    There you have a Ditto Snippet call, that outputs the latest news, and some more Snippet calls to show the latest Documents together with a Login Form. The links to the validators are hard-coded.
                    You can obviously change the contents of the "News" section by editing the "Blog" subtree of the site. That’s where Ditto looks for the documents in this case.
                    You could however completely replace that content in the right column by something you like. For example: Create a Template Variable with the name "MyContent" and choose "RichText" as input type. Assign this template variable to the template you’d like to use it in. Example: Assign it to the MODxHost template by klicking the correspondent checkbox.
                    Now you have to alter the MODxHost Template. As an example, you could replace the whole code-block posted above with the following code:
                           <div id="right-inner">
                              <h1 style="text-indent: -5000px;padding: 0px; margin:0px; font-size: 1px;">[(site_name)]</h1>
                              <div id="sidebar">
                                [*MyContent*]
                              </div>
                              <!-- close #sidebar -->
                            </div>

                    Now you replaced the whole content of the right column with some user-definable (Template-Variable) content. If you edit your "Home" Document you should now see another Richtext editor for your Right column.. put something there and see if it works.

                    The possibilities are basically endless wink Good luck

                      Hello banal ,

                      Thank you. I can’t seem to find the code for that side of the page now. I forget what it’s listed under. Could you tell me how to got there?

                      Thanks for your time.
