Right. I know trees are complicated. I was thinking more of a simple unordered list, without any fancy collapsing or expanding. Just a list. The functionality I'd like to duplicate is the ability to set up a collection of resources. In my case, I want to be able to set up an online course. Doing this requires creating documents in a sequenced hierarchical structure. When I create the documents I want to make sure they end up in the right place in the right order. The part that NewsPublisher can't do so easily right now is allow me to create children in NewsPublisher of another document that I also created in NewsPublisher. If there's a simple or non-tree way of doing that, it would be a welcome addition.
Sorry, I can't think of any easy way to do that.

There is an extra that inserts a menu at the top of the page that has links to edit and create resources. This links directly to the Manager, but it might be able to be modified a bit to provide links to a NewsPublisher page. I don't remember what it's called, I'll see if I can find it, unless somebody else knows what I'm talking about.
You can do something similar with the NpEditThisButton. You can add a tag for it to a Wayfinder or getResources Tpl chunk and have an edit button for each resource listed. I haven't done it and there's a trick to positioning the buttons that I can't remember but I know it's possible.

Found it. QuickBar.

I used it a few months ago, and if you use Policies to control what the user gets in the Manager it can be quite simple for the user to create new resources or edit existing ones. It may be worth looking at.

Either you're way better at it than I am (quite possible), or we have different definitions of "easy."
To make the MODX resources into a usable tree in the front end, taking into account published, hidemenu, and the interaction of User Groups, Resource Groups, and the relevant access Policies would not be easy for me.
I agree, but it might not be that easy.
