MODX manager not loading

hello!

Strange situation occured and I have tried to perform many tasks to fix it-no luck so far.

I have a site which was working fine for years, yet I did not use its manager for the past 3 months.
When I tried to log in today, it showed me the login form and nothing more. The manager tries to render the backend page until it shows 500 server error.

I checked php errors file-empty, modx logs-empty. Site works fine, even login features which are implemented in frontend are working fine.
Tried replacing whole /manager directory, also with no change to the site behavior. Checked file/folder permissions.

I have no more ideas what to look for. It must have been something made to the server configuration as I have not performed any changes to the site/manager in the last 3 months and now it doesn't work.

Any ideas/suggestions will be appreciated.

The first thing to try is deleting all files in the core/cache directory.

I delete these files at every step just to make sure that no wrong settings/paths are cached but still no luck.

It is very weird but for testing purposes I changed manager path from custom to and manager theme in db to default,
yet this did not fix my problem. Later on I changed these settings back and manager loaded fine and after I reloaded the page it has gone away and now I'm back at the starting point where backend shows login page and after submission loads forever...

UPDATE:

I figured out that renaming directory to something inside manager directory allows me to open manager with warnings. Once I rename directory back to , manager works perfect. But all this works until I log out cause when I do so, the whole login loop happens again. So renaming directory and naming it back works every time but this is not a fix of course. This is the weirdest modx behavior I have ever came across...

UPDATE #2:

I realised that the manager does not load because its home page does not work, all other pages work and can be access by using for example.
I tried assigning an empty dashboard to a user group I'm in yet it did not solve the problem so Im guessing there is some sort of problem with manager home page. Any ideas? [ed. note: ellipsis_89 last edited this post 11 years, 10 months ago.]

Do you have any custom widgets on the dashboard? Maybe one of them is crashing due to a PHP upgrade. Another possibility is a plugin that fires on one of the Manager events that doesn't have a return statement at the end.

Do you have the latest version of 2.2? Some of the recent releases correct issues with new versions of PHP.

I do have quite many custom widgets, but to make sure these are not causing issues I created a custom empty dashboard and assigned it to my user group.
Or do you think this is not enough and should these extensions be uninstalled?

No custom plugins in my manager, yet I will try to disable some of them and see if that makes any difference. I do have 2.2.4 which is definitely not the latest.
I also tested manager with 5.2 & 5.3 php interpreter with no noticeable difference and if there would be some notice of depreciated function for example, I should see it in error logs then.

I would think using another dashboard would be enough as long as you delete all files in the core/cache directory after making the change.

Another possibility might be an invalid resource issue that's causing trouble when MODX tries to render the resource tree. I remember a case where two resources were each other's parent.

SiteCheck is good at finding that kind of thing. It will run outside of MODX, but it takes a little effort to set that up and there's no guarantee that it would find your problem (though it's handy to have around).
