Okay, this is a dumb question, but when we created our site we really didn’t spend enough time thinking about organization. Most of our articles are in a directory articles, but we have a handful (about 10 or so) that we had put in the root folder. Now, I don’t want to use friendly alias path because I want to organize our articles into categories without losing our SEO and turning off the alias path and just putting the prefix articles/ would take care of most of the pages on our site. My problem only lies with the 10 or so articles that are still in our root folder. Please bare with me as I am a little slow on some of this. The problem is that the 10 or so articles are our most trafficked articles and the most important for us not to lose our SEO on. Any thoughts on how to work around this?

You could move the 10 docs to the articles-folder and do permanent redirects with .htaccess.

Or move them, but leave the old docs. Turn them into weblinks that point to the new URL/folder.

You know I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of leaving the old docs and turning them into weblinks. I still need to figure out how to do permanent redirects.

I used the following method when I decided to move my article archives to a more hierarchal folder structure:

        RewriteEngine On
        RewriteBase /
        rewriteRule ^archives/9-14-2007/name-of-article\.html$ http://www.domain.tld/archives/2007/9/14/name-of-article.html [R=301,L]

Sends a 301 redirect form the old location to the new location seamlessly, and from what I’ve read 301’s are the preferable way to handle page moves. smiley
