After transitioning to new servers (internally), my captcha is not working and subsequently is a major roadblock to getting into a site I’m working on. While I attempt to troubleshoot this problem, I’d like to turn off captcha manually but am unsure where to alter that setting. I did find the use_captcha setting in the _system_settings table and set it to 0 via phpmyadmin, but that’s not doing the trick. Anyone know what to do? Thanks for your help!

After setting it to ’0’ you may also need to clear your cache:
After that, browse through your cache folder, and backup all the files in there, in case something goes wrong. After backing up all the files, clean the folder, and copy all the files located in original MODx distribution package to the cache folder on your site.

but you can not get into the manager so you need to edit you cache files and find this setting

Thanks guys, that did the trick:) I thought it might have been a cache issue, but it hadn’t occurred to me that you could directly edit the cache file. I just set use_captcha to 0 in that file and I’m good to go.
Now, I’m curious if anyone has experienced the problem that led me to take this action. I was running this and a test site on apple Tiger and moved to Leopard. I am not however serving via apple’s apache install but through my own via macports. Aside from the change in platform, the only other thing that changed was the php version—it was 5.2.5 before, now it’s 5.2.6. I’d read another modx user’s post who had the same symptom, but for different reasons: In his case, the TTF font got corrupted during an FTP transfer. In my case, I used the unix ditto utility to copy/move the original modx directory to my new server. Also, I’d subsequently tested a new modx install to verify that permissions and corrupted files were not the issue. Any ideas or anybody else having captcha problems?
Cheers,
Jim
